platinum
As part of an interdisciplinary team and engagement with organisations and community groups, we have been thinking through the politics of platinum extraction and circulation. Platinum extraction is tied to its uses in catalytic convertors, jewellery and is increasingly positioned as a ‘critical mineral’ in the green transition, given its electrolysis role in green hydrogen production and catalytic convertors. The bulk of this has been focused on extraction sites in South Africa, which supply a significant volume of the world’s platinum. This work is ongoing.
